A Simple Guide to Insurance in Nigeria

Think insurance is confusing, expensive, or only for rich people? Discover what insurance really means, common myths Nigerians believe, and how Insurance Made Simple makes it easier to understand.

“God Forbid!” But Have You Actually Planned for the Unexpected?

You know that Nigerian response: “God forbid!”

Someone mentions an accident, a house fire, a hospital emergency, or anything that sounds remotely unfortunate, and immediately, somebody says, “God forbid! It will never happen to me.”

Fair enough. We all want the best for ourselves. Nobody wakes up in the morning hoping to spend the afternoon dealing with an emergency.

But here is a little something to think about: praying that something bad will not happen and preparing in case it does are not mutually exclusive.

You can pray, plan, work hard, save money, invest, and still take steps to protect what you have built.

That is where insurance comes in.

And if the word insurance already makes you think of complicated forms, confusing terms, and people asking you to pay money for something you hope you will never need, relax. Let’s ease into it.

So, What Exactly Is Insurance?

Imagine you and a group of people contribute money to a common fund. If one person experiences a covered loss, the fund helps provide financial support according to the agreed terms.

That is the basic idea behind insurance: you pay a premium in exchange for financial protection against specified risks.

Of course, real insurance policies have conditions, exclusions, and limits. It is not a magic wand that makes every problem disappear. But when you understand what a policy covers, it can help you avoid carrying certain financial burdens alone.

Think about it. You have worked hard to buy your car, build your business, furnish your home, or provide for your family. Wouldn’t it make sense to consider how you would protect those things if life decided to throw you a curveball?

As the book Insurance Made Simple puts it:

“Building wealth without protecting the engine that produces it is like constructing a beautiful house and leaving the roof open.”

Now, that is something to think about.
